Our Tipping Guidelines on Kilimanjaro & Safari Trips
Recommended Minimum Tipping Rates
Lead Guide: $25 per day
Assistant Guide: $20 per day
Chef/Cook: $15 per day
Porters: $12 per day per porter
For example, if four travelers are on the mountain, each person could contribute $5.00 per day to make a one day tip for the assistant guide.
Cash condition: Bring clean, undamaged US dollar bills printed after 2013 or Tanzanian shillings. Avoid coins since they cannot be exchanged locally.
The ceremony: Tips are normally handed over collectively during a celebration on the final day at the last camp or at the park gate.

Recommended Tipping Amounts for Safari Trips:
Safari Guide: $20–$30 per day per group.
Safari Cook: $20–$30 per day per group (if on a camping safari trip)
For instance, if four travelers are on safari, each person could contribute $5.00 per day to make a one day tip of 20$ for the driver-guide.
Tented Camp/Hotel and Lodge Staff:
Consider an overall amount that you feel comfortable to tip, and then press it into a communal tip box at checkout to be shared with back-of-the-house staff.
Transfer Drivers: USD 5–$10 per person per transfer for airport or town hops.
Airport Porters: USD 1–$2 per bag handled at the time of service.
Practical Rules for Tipping
Use Cash: Cash is king on safari. US Dollars (USD) and Tanzanian Shillings (TZS) are both accepted, but USD is preferred for major guide tips
Check the Bill Year: If tipping in USD, bring bills printed from 2013 or newer. Local banks and businesses in Tanzania routinely reject older or tattered dollar bills.
Bring Small Denominations: Keep a supply of clean $1, $2, $5, $10, and $20 bills.
